At Ohio University, I have been blessed with numerous opportunities that have enriched my personal, academic, and professional development. Among these opportunities, my role as a graduate intern with the Bobcat Student Orientation (BSO) program stands out as a truly transformative experience. As an international student, I embarked on a journey within BSO that allowed me to navigate the intricacies of academia and culture, while also immersing myself in the vibrant tapestry of Ohio University’s campus life. With utmost gratitude, I express my heartfelt appreciation to BSO for the profound impact it has had on shaping my academic and professional trajectory.
Bobcat Student Orientation (BSO), operating under the Office of First-Year & Student Transitions, plays a vital role in orienting all new undergraduate students at Ohio University’s campus. The primary objective of BSO is to ensure a smooth transition for students and their families, fostering a sense of belonging, connecting them with campus resources, and instilling confidence in their academic schedules. BSO endeavors to create an inclusive and welcoming environment where students easily connect with peers, faculty, and staff, forming a supportive network. Its goals encompass helping students feel connected to the Ohio University community, equipping them with tools for academic success, and empowering them to take ownership of their college experiences.
As a graduate intern for BSO, I had the privilege of assisting in the seamless execution of orientation programs for incoming students and their families. Working closely with the Director and Assistant Director of Undergraduate Orientation Programs, I undertook a range of responsibilities. These included coordinating various program elements such as check-in, check-out, staff tasks preparation and management, virtual orientation programs, evening programs, and office administration. Additionally, I collaborated as a liaison with the College of Arts and Sciences and their advising teams to ensure a seamless orientation experience for all first-year, transfer, and virtual students. A key aspect of my role involved supervising a team of Orientation Leaders (OLs), guiding their growth and development throughout summer training and program implementation. This entailed designing training sessions based on their interests and facilitating small group training sessions. Moreover, I was entrusted with addressing logistical issues and making decisions in the absence of the orientation professional staff, particularly during day and day 2 program responsibilities.
Working with BSO opened doors to a plethora of exciting opportunities that allowed me to connect deeply with incoming students and their families. Witnessing their enthusiasm and excitement as they embarked on their college journey was truly gratifying. The energy and sense of possibility in the air were contagious, igniting a shared passion for helping these students succeed. Moreover, the camaraderie I developed with my fellow interns and colleagues further enriched my experience. Our team comprised individuals from diverse backgrounds and abilities, and collaborating with them fostered a spirit of cooperation and mutual support. Together, we learned invaluable lessons in administration, teamwork, and the power of unity. Through shared experiences and challenges, we formed lasting friendships, creating a vibrant and inclusive community within BSO.
As an international student, my involvement with BSO held a special significance in my journey. Having come from a different country, I had never experienced orientation in the same manner as it is conducted in the United States. BSO exposed me to the extensive range of resources offered by Ohio University, ensuring a smooth transition into my academic journey as well. This firsthand exposure to campus services, policies, and community norms greatly contributed to my integration into the university community. It is through BSO that I discovered essential support systems, academic opportunities, and extracurricular activities that enriched my experience as an international student. However, this exposure also shed light on the unique needs of international students during orientation. Reflecting on my own journey, I believe that incorporating elements similar to BSO in international student orientations would enhance their sense of belonging, help them navigate unfamiliar environments, and introduce them to essential university resources that foster their academic and personal success.
My time as a graduate intern with BSO has been nothing short of an enriching experience, both on a personal and professional level. Engaging with incoming students and their families allowed me to develop a deeper understanding of their aspirations, concerns, and needs. Every interaction served as a reminder of the transformative power of higher education and the vital role BSO plays in students’ lives. Through my involvement in BSO, I have honed my organizational and leadership skills, learning how to adapt to unforeseen challenges and work under pressure. These experiences have instilled in me resilience, adaptability, and the ability to think critically in fast-paced environments. I am immensely grateful to BSO and Ohio University for providing me with the transformative opportunities that have shaped my journey. The invaluable lessons and growth I have experienced during my time as a graduate intern have set me on a path of continuous learning, self-discovery, and a deep sense of purpose.
My experience as a graduate intern with BSO holds immense relevance to my studies as a graduate student of Higher Education. The insights gained from working closely with incoming students, understanding their needs, and witnessing the impact of effective orientation programs have deepened my understanding of student development and success. This experience has reinforced my commitment to the field of Higher Education and my passion for supporting students in their college journey.
As I continue my studies, I will draw upon the invaluable lessons learned during my time with BSO. The emphasis on creating a welcoming and inclusive environment, providing resources and support, and fostering a sense of belonging aligns perfectly with the principles I am exploring and studying in my academic pursuits. I am excited to further explore the best practices in orientation programs, student engagement, and holistic student support, and to contribute to the enhancement of student experiences in higher education.
The transformative experiences I have had as a graduate intern with BSO have not only shaped my personal and professional growth, but they have also strengthened my dedication to the field of Higher Education. Armed with the knowledge and insights gained, I am eager to make meaningful contributions and drive positive change within the realm of student services, orientation programs, and overall student success.
In essence, my experience with BSO has provided a practical and enriching foundation for my studies and future career in Higher Education. I am grateful for the opportunities afforded to me, and I am excited to apply the knowledge, skills, and perspectives gained from my time as a graduate intern to make a lasting impact on the lives of students and the field of Higher Education as a whole.
