In the face of mounting challenges and growing polarization among Pakistani youth, the role of our educational institutions becomes even more critical. These institutions hold the potential to serve as transformative agents, nurturing spaces where young individuals can transcend the limitations imposed by external circumstances. However, to fulfill this pivotal role, it is essential for our schools and universities to embrace the principles of appreciative education. By doing so, we can create an environment that empowers students, encourages critical thinking, and nurtures their emotional well-being.
The challenges faced by Pakistani youth today are multifaceted. Social, religious, and political polarization has created deep divisions among them, leading to intolerance, hopelessness, and a lack of unity. As someone who has dedicated nearly a decade to working in the Pakistani development sector, with a focus on countering violent extremism, promoting social cohesion, and empowering youth and women, I have witnessed firsthand the consequences of these challenges. Despite our efforts to promote tolerance and acceptance of diversity, the forces of polarization continue to exert their influence.
During my journey of pursuing a graduate degree in higher education in the United States, I have been exposed to a wealth of innovative ideas and concepts that have the potential to transform education in Pakistan. One such concept that has deeply resonated with me is appreciative education. Rooted in the principles of positive psychology, appreciative education emphasizes building upon individual strengths, fostering positive relationships, and cultivating a growth mindset. This approach acknowledges the untapped potential within each student and seeks to empower them to become active participants in their own learning journey.
